You may remember learning about the bubonic plague that ravaged Europe, but did you know that this is where Four Thieves (Protect) got its start?
The name Four Thieves comes from the belief that it was originated by four thieves in Marseilles as a prophylactic against the plague in the early 1600s. Others claim that it derives from a man named Richard Forthave, and that over time the name got smashed to the current version.
Either way, this was not the first time this type of concoction had been used. A Cardinal Wolsey of England supposedly held an empty orange peel filled a sponged soaked in vinegar and spices to protect himself against sick parishioners.
My recipe contains Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary Essential Oils. Itʼs great for the same use as its origins due to its antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial and anti-infectious properties. A great way to use Four Thieves is in homemade cleaning supplies to help make your home virus free. You can also use my pre-made Spritz to help protect you at home, the office or on the go!

Have just bought couple dozen bottles and would like to use it along with massage therapy.
What is the best way to use it for your immune system? Is ingestion a possibility?
Our essential oils are 100% pure grade, meaning that they’re not cut, diluted or adulterated in any way, which makes them highly concentrated botanical substances. Pure essential oils are 1000 times more potent than their leafy counterparts. While we’re not advocating ANY essential oil ingestion protocol here, we would like to clear up the confusion regarding essential oil ingestion.
Most essential oils commonly used in Aromatherapy are safe to ingest in very small amounts (approximately 1-8 drops/day), depending on the oil and your medical history. If you feel this may improve your health, we strongly urge you to do so only under the guidance of a licensed Aromatherapist who will help you determine the right program for you. To boost immunity we would recommend diffusing Protect Blend in your house or car. You can also use our Protect Blend Herbal Soap daily for a nice immunity boost.
I want to use these oils for massage, will they stain my clothing ?
Trish, Thank you for your question. Our Protect Blend Massage Spritz is made with Grapeseed, Jojoba, and Coconut oils, which can be applied without fear of staining clothing. That being said, it is important to make sure oils are deeply massaged into the skin and absorption time is given before putting on clothing. Castor oil is one oil that can cause staining, and should be used with this in mind.
I just received Protect as a gift and would like to make an all purpose cleaner. How many drops of Protect do I need to put or what type of ratio should I be using? Also, do you have any studies on how Protect stands up on killing germs and bacteria? Thank you.
I should note I have the Protect essential oil, not the spritz.
Shannon, Typically you want to use a 5% essential oil to 95% cleaning product ratio. We have not done any personal studies on the Protect Oil Blend, but there have been many studies over the years on the specific oils contained in the blend and their germ killing properties.
