Essential Oils and the Chakras

by FabulousFrannie

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in different cultures and religious ceremonies. In addition to being used in meditation and prayer, these oils have also been used to align the chakras.

There are seven primary chakras, or energy centers, found in each of us. They help balance our mind, body and spirit in different ways. Each chakra can be accessed and affected with specific essential oils.

Root Chakra
Located at the base of the spine and symbolized by the color red, it influences our feelings of stability and survival. An imbalance will be indicated by feelings of unease and an inability to move forward. It is imperative to have a balanced Root Chakra to balance our other chakras. Affected by Cedarwood, Frankincense, Myrrh, Patchouli and Vetiver.

Sacral Chakra
Located slightly under the naval and symbolized by the color orange, it influences artistic and mental creativity, and our sexual vitality. An imbalance can be indicated by neediness, sexual dysfunction, unfaithfulness or creative block. Affected by Bergamot, Clary Sage, Orange, Patchouli and Ylang Ylang.

Solar Plexus Chakra
Located slightly above the naval and symbolized by the color yellow, it establishes inner peace, personal identity and self-worth. An imbalance is often demonstrated by nervousness, low self-esteem or arrogance. Affected by Black Pepper, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clove Bud, Coriander, Cypress, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Juniper, Lemongrass, Mandarin, Peppermint, Petitgrain, Rosemary, Vetiver, Spearmint, Vetiver and Ylang Ylang.

Heart Chakra
Located around the heart and symbolized by the color green, it gives us the ability to experience love in a healthy way, as well as exhibit joy, contentment and compassion. An imbalance effects how we demonstrate jealousy and selfishness, as well as cope with sadness, particularly death and abandonment. Affected by Bergamot, Cypress, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin, Orange, Tangerine and Ylang Ylang.

Throat Chakra
Located at the center of the neck/throat and represented by the color blue, it influences our ability to communicate effectively verbally (hearing and listening) and nonverbally (body language and written word). An imbalance is demonstrated by poor listening skills, manipulation, and repressed thoughts and emotions. Affected by: Basil, Bergamot, Chamomile, Cypress, Peppermint and Spearmint.

Third Eye or Brow Chakra
Located in the middle of the forehead and symbolized by the color Indigo, it is associated with memory, wisdom, dreams and spirituality. An imbalance can be exhibited when a person is more judgmental, forgetful and sleepless than usual. Affected by Clary Sage, Cypress, Elemi, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Juniper, Marjoram, Patchouli, Rosemary and Vetiver.

Crown Chakra
Located at the top of the head and symbolized by the color violet or white, it influences our ability to have a balanced and connected spiritual life, as well as have a sense of greater purpose. An imbalance can be exhibited by a fear of death, and unclear life or spiritual direction. Affected by Cypress, Elemi, Frankincense, Gurjum Balsam, Helichrysum, Lavender, Myrrh, and Vetiver.

Essential oils can be used to balance these chakras in several different ways, but one particularly effective and popular method is by diffusion. You can set up a diffuser in a nice quiet place then pray, meditate, do yoga… anything that will allow you to connect more with yourself and whatever higher power you believe in. Another great way to apply these oils is through therapeutic massage, which will not only help recharge you spiritually, but physically as well. As with most things, it’s about finding the oils and methods that suit YOUR needs.

How do you use essential oils to meditate? Do we use each one to align chakras?

Great question! The oils listed each have properties that help align the specified Chakra. If you’re feeling unbalanced in one particular area (or multiple) I recommend creating a blend that incorporates one or a few of the listed oils. It’s often good to start with the Root Chakra and move from there, since we must be grounded in order to find balance in our other Chakras. A great method is to use your blend in a diffuser while meditating/praying or in times of great stress to promote harmony.

How would you use the roll oils?

The roll-ons are already pre-diluted with coconut oil so you can use them anywhere on your body. I recommend shaking gently before use and applying to the temples, bottom of feet, wrists and any other pressure points.

Hi Phoebe, Thank you for your question. We now offer a line of specially formulated essential oil blends for each of the seven Chakras. Our Grounded or Root Chakra blend is made with Angelica Root, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Patchouli and Vetiver essential oils to help promote positive self-esteem. It’s available in both undiluted oil and roll-on; you can read more about all seven Chakra blends here.

To use: Undiluted oil can be used in a diffuser or combined with a carrier oil and applied topically. Pre-diluted roll-ons can be applied to the temples or other pressure points to help enhance feelings of stability.
