Essential Oils for Winter Blues

The holidays are a time for celebration—quality time with family and friends, enjoying delicious food, watching the snow fall… the list goes on and on. With all these wondrous activities to partake in, you need to remember to protect yourself from cold and flu bugs, chapped skin and the ole holiday favorite… exhaustion.

I may sound like a broken record, but one of the best ways to protect you and your brood from the not so jolly parts of winter is by getting enough sleep and drinking lots of water. Although these are good measures to take, sometimes germs, dry skin and fatigue still happen.

Here are some essential oils to help you and yours out this winter.

Cold & Flu
There are plenty of essential oils that can help with cold and flu germs, but one of the best overall oils is Eucalyptus (check out a soothing Vapor Rub recipe here). This oil helps open up the airways making it easier for you to breath. It has also been shown to attack germs, making it great for cold prevention too (I recommend adding it to household cleaners). Frankincense is often associated with the holidays—and for good reason. This diverse oil is great for the respiratory system, helping to provide relief from coughing as it helps reduce inflammation in the airways. Some studies have also found that it can be helpful in fending off harmful bacteria and supporting a healthy immune system.

FF Blend Options: Easy Breathzy—made with Eucalyptus, Cajeput and Peppermint to support the immune system and promote well-being. Protect—Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary are used to help facilitate a healthy home and body.

Other essential oils for Cold & Flu germs: Lavender, Peppermint, Tea Tree and Thyme.

Dry Skin
There are several ways to protect skin from Jack Frost. If you’re looking to seal moisture into your lips and minimize dryness, be sure to try one of my luscious Lip Balms (Restore is particularly helpful in the winter months). Once your lips are taken care of, let’s focus on your whole body… and the best place to start is with Helichrysum. This soothing oil helps reduce minor inflammation, redness and itching. It also promotes oil production (in a good way). Myrrh is another great oil, as it helps soothe and condition dry skin, while fighting harmful particles that can dry skin out.

FF Blend Option: Rejuvenate—specially formulated with Grapefruit, Juniper, Cedarwood and Clary Sage to leave skin looking and feeling refreshed.

Other essential oils for Dry Skin: Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender and Ylang Ylang.

Fatigue
No one wants to be a party pooper and go home early… but sometimes you just have no more energy. One oil that helps relieve fatigue is Basil. This revitalizing oil helps stimulate the mind and aid concentration. Additionally, this is a mentally uplifting oil. Like Basil, Eucalyptus is beneficial in combatting fatigue in that it stimulates both the mind and body, as it helps reduce physical pain.

FF Blend Option: Energy—contains Bergamot and Rosemary to provide the mind and body with the perfect pick-me-up.

Other essential oils for Fatigue: Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Peppermint and Rosemary.
