It’s that time of year again—the sun is finally out and so are you! The best part of summer is all the fun you can have outdoors, the not so great part is the sunburns that often accompanies it. No need to worry, there are several essential oils you can use to ease itchiness and redness.
Last summer I discussed how beneficial Lavender can be and shared Soothing Sunburn Relief Oil and After-Sun Lotion recipes… Now I’d like to talk about some other essential oils (and one carrier oil) that can help.
Chamomile
Not only is this oil emotionally comforting, but it’s beneficial physically as well. Chamomile cools sun-parched skin, and has been shown to reduce the appearance of redness.
Helichrysum
Helichrysum helps replenish skin from minor damage while also providing relief from discomfort.
Peppermint
The soothing chemical menthol is found in this oil, which makes it ideal for relieving mild pain and itching. Peppermint is sensitive enough to be used on just about any skin type.
Tea Tree
This oil is renowned for its ability to aid minor skin conditions. While relieving discomfort with its anti-inflammatory properties, Tea Tree also works to minimize blistering and peeling that can occur from mild to moderate sunburns.
Coconut Oil
Though not technically an essential oil, Coconut Oil can calm pain and inflammation that comes from extended sun exposure. Coconut oil is absorbed quickly by the skin, which means that it provides fast relief and moisture to dry skin. Some studies have shown that this oil has a natural SPF of 5-10, which makes it great to pair with your more heavy-duty sunscreens.
