Eucalyptus and Essential Oils to Use when Congested

by FabulousFrannie

Normal congestion is a problem that can happen any time of year, but is especially prevalent during the winter months. It is the result of nasal passages or sinus cavities being inflamed by allergies, a cold or the flu. Our bodies produce too much mucus as a result of inflammation, which irritates the mucus membranes inside our noses. Our noses are just as annoyed by these invaders as we are!

There are many different essential oils that can help provide some relief. They include: Benzoin, Clove, Elemi, Eucalyptus, LavenderLemonLime, Marjoram, Melaleuca, Oregano, Peppermint, Sandalwood and Thyme. Normal amounts of mucus may be reduced using Birch, Clove, CypressGinger, Melaleuca, Tea Tree or Thyme.

For best results, use either a diffuser or topical application. Steam is beneficial because it loosens up the bronchial passages and allows the oils to reach the inflamed areas. For topical use, combine your desired essential oil with a carrier oil and gently rub around your nose and chest. This method increases circulation and warmth in the chest. You can also use either my Cold and Flu blend or the following recipe to make your own version of vapor rub.
