While shopping at the store or online, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the different labels and terms you see. In an age where so many products are chemically processed and synthesized, it’s important to be cautious of what we’re putting in and on our bodies. And essential oils are no different.
Generally, when we consume foods that are certified “organic,” we can rest assured that they are of a higher quality than “non-organic” items since they are tested and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA’s “organic” seal indicates that a product doesn’t contain any synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, and is most likely of higher quality.
Since the FDA doesn’t currently regulate essential oil standards and quality, we rely on Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) to test quality. And in the case of essential oils, “organic” and high quality don’t necessarily go together. The best oils come from plants that are under high amounts of stress, meaning that they’re constantly working to protect themselves from chemicals and other invaders. Since “organic” plants don’t need to protect themselves from these chemicals, they are not working as hard. When purchasing essential oils, it’s important to look beyond the “organic” label and take other factors into consideration.
Although most plants that produce essential oils have the natural ability to defend themselves against pests and don’t need pesticides, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes growers will experience fungal issues and use chemicals to prevent the loss of crops. BUT, if the plant has been sprayed, the chemicals won’t distill since their molecules are too large; they’ll be left behind with the unused plant material. This means that even if a plant has been sprayed with pesticides, the essential oil won’t contain these chemicals.
So the short answer to this question is No, our essential oils are not organic. They are, however, of the utmost quality and are ideal for therapeutic use. Feel free to request a GCMS from us at any time to see for yourself! (We love making sure that you have all the information you could possibly want and need.)
